Battle of Antietam: September 17, 1862

AntietamThe Confederates crossed the Potomac into Maryland in September of 1862 with several objectives. Lee wanted to shift the war out of Virginia to give the country time to recover and in order that the harvest could be gathered. The armies clashed in the meadows, tilled fields and woodlots in the valley. This battle was known as the bloodiest single-day battle. AntietamThe battlefield area still looks much as it did in September of 1862.
